Air France stewardesses,
furious at being ordered to wear headscarves in Tehran, say they will
refuse to fly to the Iranian capital when the airline resumes the
service later this month.
Female members of flight crews have been ordered to cover their hair
once they disembark in Tehran and unions are demanding that the flights
be made voluntary for women.
The resumption of a thrice-weekly service between Paris and Tehran, planned for April 17 after an eight-year break, follows a thaw in relations since Iran agreed to dismantle large sections of its nuclear programme.
Iranian women have been forced by law to cover their hair or face
stiff fines since the 1979 Islamic revolution. In staunchly secular France, however, public signs of religion have been frowned upon since a 1905 law separating church and state.

Francken has drafted a document – “Newcomer’s statement.” The
proposal is expected to be passed by parliament in the next few
months, according to Reuters. All non-EU immigrants and their
children, who wish to stay in Belgium for longer than three
months, will be asked “to respect the laws and democratic
principles” and concede to freedom of speech, freedom of
religion and freedom of sexual orientation. The obligation to
sign the “Newcomer’s statement” does not apply to international
students and asylum seekers… Immigrants would also be asked to
agree to “do everything possible” to prevent any act of
terrorism and report it to the police.

Italy’s
Interior minister Angelino Alfano warns the refugee “system is at risk
of collapse” following an 80 per cent spike in the number of arrivals
to Italy across the central Mediterranean Sea in the first quarter of
this year compared to 2015. Alfano fears that Syrians headed for
Turkey will inetead head for Libya for an even more hazardous
Mediterranean Sea crossing to Italy.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is considering
“alternative” ways to admit more Syrian refugees to the United States,
beyond the current refugee resettlement program, according to the Center
for Immigration Studies.
